Cleaning Your Automotive Glass
Having a clean windshield can make all the difference in how your car appears as well as how well you’re able to see while driving.
Knowing how to clean your window properly is one of the most common questions we’re asked, and here are some tips…
Avoid Glass Cleaners that Contain Ammonia
Glass cleaners like Windex contain ammonia. While good for home use, the ammonia may damage the coating on automotive glass over prolonged use. Ammonia also may damage non-factory window tinting. Avoiding glass cleaners that contain this ingredient, or are labeled as ‘ammonia-free’ or ‘safe for tinted windows’ are preferred.
Tips to Clean your Automotive Glass
Cleaning your automotive glass is the last step of the detailing process, and best when done in the shade.
You look out your windshield the most when driving, so take your time. Use a damp microfiber towel or terry cloth with your non-ammonia window cleaner. Wipe up and down and side to side using long strokes. Use the dry side of the towel to remove the remaining wetness from the windshield, and do the same process on the back window.
Don’t forget to roll down your windows to get the top edges of the glass in the doors.
You may need to use a clay bar. Clay bars are often used to remove contaminants embedded in the glass.
It may take several applications, and possibly more than one type of cleaner on the same window to remove the stubborn film.
Reach the bottom of the glass in your back window or windshield with the towel on the backside of your hand.
Utilizing these tips and regularly cleaning your automotive glass will help make sure your automotive glass lasts a long time.
