If you have a newer car that has adaptive cruise control, cross-traffic alert, park assist, lane departure warning, etc… you most likely have an Advanced Driver Assistance Safety System (ADAS) as one of the many features of your car. This system includes many sensors and cameras.
ADAS cameras control such systems as blind-spot monitors, collision avoidance systems, driver drowsiness detection, and lane departure systems. Often these cameras and sensors include your windshield. If you’ve replaced your windshield and don’t see a warning light, this may mean that the cameras work, but they may not be calibrated.
It is recommended on certain models that when you replace your windshield, you calibrate your system using an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) windshield, as OEM is manufactured to the same exact specs as the original manufacturer. It is also recommended to recalibrate your ADAS systems after a fault code, a disconnect, or a change of suspension or wheel alignment.
If you choose not to have your system calibrated, the ADAS will not work correctly, and a misaligned camera could endanger the operation of the system and cause a major accident or injury.
Due to the importance of your vehicle’s advanced safety system, you need a trusted expert with the capability of recalibration to ensure your advanced safety features are operating at their optimal level.
