So you locked your keys in your car, or you know someone who has and you’re looking for a solution to quickly resolve this very frustrating situation.

Knowing the best method of opening a locked car door depends a lot on the type of locks installed on your car, along with the tools that are readily available.

Here are a few do-it-yourself options on how to open a locked car door. These methods tend to work best for older cars:

Wire Hanger

For old-style door locks that are on the window ledge…

Straighten the hanger and bend the end into a small hook. Insert the hanger between the rubber molding and side of the window and then carefully hook it around the door button and pull it up.

Door Stop/Wedge and a long metal rod

Insert the wedge into the top of the door to make an opening, and place the rod in the opinion and use it to push down on the unlock button of your car.

Unfortunately, if your vehicle has door locks that are recessed inside the interior door handle, it’s best to get professional help.

Newer vehicles tend to come with ‘digital keys’ that don’t allow the doors to be locked with the keys inside the vehicle. If you lose your digital key, it may often take several days or weeks to get a replacement, as well as the potential inability to start your vehicle. In these circumstances, it may be best to call roadside assistance (or a local locksmith) and ask if they will be able to open the door.

As frustrating and potentially costly as this may sound, having a professional open the door for you will cost a lot less than breaking a window in the process of trying to gain access to your vehicle.

If, however, your windows were damaged in the process of gaining access to your vehicle, call us, we are here for you.
